So if you haven't already figured it out, parking can be HORRENDOUS here at the U. The University Transportation Services (UTS) is in charge of ticketing, parking, permits, and on-campus transportation. If you get a parking ticket on the streets of Durham, this is NOT UNH's responsibility. UNH is responsible for ticketing and towing from UNH lots and events. Here are some things you definitely need to know if you plan to bring a car of have an overnight guest.

  • Parking is free ANY day after 6pm until 7am

  • Parking is free on weekends beginning Friday at 6 until Monday at 7am

  • Metered parking occurs between 7am-6pm at $1.25-$1.50/hour

  • If you receive a ticket and would like to pay OR appeal it (to hopefully get rid of the ticket and not have to pay anything), you can do so online. Appeals must be submitted within 10 days after receiving the ticket

Winter Parking Ban
Winter Parking Ban occurs between December 1st-April 1st. During this time, EVEN if it is NOT snowing, you or your visitor can NOT park your vehicle in a UNH lot between midnight-6am. Exempt lots (where you can park your vehicle) include section 4 of A-Lot (Gables), West Edge, the Lodges, and Sage Way visitor Lot.

If you want to know if a lot is open or not, you can call the regularly updated line at (603)-862-1001. Weather conditional lots like B-Lot and C-Lot will have signs at the entrance saying "Open" in green or "Closed" in red to let you know if you can or can not park there.

Vehicles in violation are subjected to up to a $75 fine or towed.

Parking Pass Costs
  • Commuter Pass: $50/year (Living in Dover, Newmarket, Lee, essentially out of central Durham)
  • Gables, Woodsides, Forest Park Apartments: $350/year or $225/semester
  • Motorcycle/moped: $25/year

There are other businesses around town (as well as apartment complexes that will allow you to pay for semester/yearly parking passes, you just have to ask/call around!)
What if my car was towed?!
Some of us have been there.. woken up the next morning after parking your car for a single night (or maybeee you have gotten away with it for a few weeks) and been all...

"Dude.... where's my car?"

Well, chances are it has been towed to Smitty's. You can walk down there, it is right next to the Irving gas station. He will make you pay about $100. I know, for having it towed a few minutes down the road. If you think yours might have been towed, you can call him at this number (603) 868-9785.

Good luck!
