What happens if/when you get caught throwing a party or doing something you're not supposed to in your dorm is taken on a case by case basis. Remember that you signed the Students Rights, Rules and Responsibilities Handbook, which explains most of this in detal and can be found online at...

  • University staff members can enter your room at any time, whether or not you are present. Advanced notice is not require

  • When an RA knocks at your door, you are supposed to answer within a "timely fashion" (10 seconds). What are your choices?

    • You can open the door completely and let the RA come in

    • Everyone in your room has to come out of the room and talk to the RAs.

    • Even your guests, UNH related or not, can get in trouble, not just the people who live in that specific room

    • Or just don't open the door

Often times, RAs can become great advocates and offer helpful advice about roomate situations, campus life, etc. If you ever have a question, or even need advice after you have been caught or arrested, RAs can help! Just remember, They have a job to perform, but aren't "out to get you".

WHat if I don't open the door?

  • Refusing to open the door will result in a "failure to comply". Receiving this will most likely result in being put on probation, in which case study abroad/scholarship opportunities can be taken away at that time or in the future.

  • If the RA's know that people are in the room and you refuse to open the door, then they have reason to believe that someone is inside with distress. In this situation, they could call the police, who have the right to open the door if you still refuse to answer

  • The RA is only able to see things in plain view and are not allowed to open closests, drawers, fridges, etc. Even when it is closing time for winter/Thanksgiving break

  • The RA does not decide what happens to you, they are just the eyes and ears of the dorm.

So you've been caught...

1. If an RA sees any alcohol or can prove that you are drunk in any way, like by throwing up, you will be written up.

2. You will be charged with "hosting a party" if other people are in your dorm room when you get caught, even if it's just one other person

3. When you get written up, the Hall Director then determines if you willb be filed in an incident report, which then gets sent to the Office of Conduct and Mediation

4. The OCM then decides what will happen to you. Most of the time you will receive probation, but there is a chance you will be evicted from on-campus housing.

5. If an RA even smells pot or any other drug they are required to call the police. Don't let them in without a warrant. Getting caught with drugs will most likely result in eviction and other legal issues outside of the University System

6. If anyone is injured or experiencing alcohol poisoning, you should contact the RA. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
